Distilling in Colorado

In the 8 years I have been distilling It’s been a long, strange trip.  Spring 44 is the 4th distillery I have worked at in 8 years.  I have seen everything from Glow in the dark Vodka to moonshine made from doughnuts.  I have had a part in developing over 60 different products across many different brands.  Some successful, some not so much.  One of the best things I have seen is the growth of Craft Distilling, particularly in Colorado.

I started as an apprentice in 2004 at a small distillery named Pure Distilleries in Colorado Springs.  We had one product, a vodka, called Altius.  We started just a few months after Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey started distilling in Denver.  Soon after us was Peach Street Distillers in Palisade and then Peak Spirits in Hotchkiss.  So from 2 of us in 2004 we have now grown to 26 as of last count of the TTB records. There was a great write up about it last year by our friends at Denver Off the Wagon.  I have personal knowledge of 5 more in the process of starting up and I imagine there are more we just don’t know about yet.

The great thing is that everyone is finding their own niche and doing a fantastic job at waving the Colorado Flag in the market. We are so fortunate to have such a great local distilled spirits scene in Colorado.  I encourage you to check out what is available at your local watering hole.
